First we had Dolby Digital with 5.1 channels (five speakers plus one subwoofer) for DVDs, then the THX and Dolby Digital Surround EX 6.1 format, which added a center channel in the rear. Now comes word that THX is ready to start certifying 7.1 channels with their new Ultra2 format.

Judging from the responses to our Vote! question from several months ago, a significant number of home-theater fans are not happy with DVD region codes. The film studios are attempting to control their staggered rollouts of movies for the consumer markets around the planet with the codes, which prevent a DVD made in one region of the world from playing on a DVD player from another region.

High definition television has been slow to gain traction in consumer markets, partly due to ongoing struggles between the content providers and equipment manufacturers. Movie studios wish to restrict the consumer's use of an HDTV signal while manufacturers recognize that consumers will be slow to embrace any technology that becomes too cumbersome or restrictive to implement.

In poll after poll, Guide to Home Theater readers suggest that some form of high definition DVD will be one of the key developments needed to give HDTV a real kick in the pants. It may be a while before the copyright issues are resolved sufficiently to make it happen, but the technology appears to be on its way.

The High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) organization announced last week that the draft specification version 0.9 defining HDMI digital interface for consumer electronics is now available for review at the organization's Website. The HDMI members include Hitachi, Matsushita (Panasonic), Philips, Silicon Image, Sony, Thomson Multimedia, and Toshiba.

Last week, Thomson Multimedia announced what the company terms "an aggressive new effort" designed to bring HDTV within reach of more American consumers. Thomson, which manufactures and markets the RCA brand of television and video products, says it will be trimming suggested retail prices of RCA HDTV sets by 20%, effective in April.
