What can I say - it plays CDs, has an AM/FM radio, 80 watts of power in a 2.1 system, uses Meridian DSP processing and, best of all, it has a clock. The sample cuts we heard were more lush than any "radio" you've ever heard. The Meridian F80 is available in Ferrari red, black, white, silver and yellow.

Come October 1, 2008, Denon owners will be able to download firmware upgrades for their the AVR-3808CI, AVR-4308CI from Denon's website for a $100. What's that get you? Audyssey Dynamic Volume and Audyssey Dynamic EQ, for two, and Sirius radio ready capability and Rhapsody streaming capability for three and four. Meanwhile, the higher end AVR-5308CI AVR (picture) and AVP-A1HDC1 pre/pro can get a free firmware upgrade of Audyssey Dynamic Volume and Sirius Radio capability.

Well, I finally got an HD DVD player. Thanks Shane for helping me decide on a model. In the end, I got the top of the line Toshiba XA2 and I couldn't be more pleased. 1080p and one of the best upconverting DVD players around. What's not to like? Feeding my also new JVC DLA-HD1 projector and lighting up a 78" wide (89" diag) Stewart Screen (Studio Tek 130 – 1.3 gain), the picture is to die for.

Focal, the French speaker and speaker component manufacturer formerly doing business as Focal-JMLabs, has always made a point of getting great sound at shows. While I didn't run into Focal at Primedia's Home Entertainment 2006 show in Los Angeles this June, I did hear some music in the MBL room that morphed into another sale for Amazon. As I work on the final edit of this review I'm listening to the just-delivered Jeff Buckley rendition of "Hallelujah" from his 1994 album Grace (CD, Columbia, CK 57528). The memory of what this song sounded like on the $47,000/pair MBL 101E speakers is still fresh. At just 1/10th the MBL's price, Focal's Profile 918 speakers get me very, very close to the fire-branded goose bumps I felt in LA last month.

Kam M. Leung, designer of the Master 3 speaker from Focus Audio beamed proudly when he I told him music seemed to float between his massive speakers without clinging to them. The center image was stable, deep and just there. At $20,000 / pr, they're not a casual purchase, but if you're at the show, stop in and hear them. Ask Kam to play the cut from Neils Lofgrin: Acoustic Live. It's to die for.

No, it's not Mad Max Times Four. This is the business end of the Meridian amplifier designed for use with their in wall speakers. There are four input channels, each with both single-ended and balanced connections. Each input feeds two of the amps eight output channels and results in 100 watts per tweeter and 100 watts per woofer for biwiring each of Meridian's new in-wall speakers. With eight channels, you can power all your surround channels in a 7.1 setup.

There’s no better way to make yourself seem foolish than by trying to predict the future, but if I limit myself to one year, how far off can I be?

A few weeks ago, DirecTv sent me something that wasn't wrapping paper around my bill - notification that they would be "launching more than 75 HD channels … by year end." I've already talked about the DirecTv 10 and 11 satellites (see "Er, no, actually, you're watching them . . . .") back in March 2006. I've had most of the big local stations in hidef now over the satellite since March 2007 (NBC, CW, CBS, and FOX, MY, but not ABC or PBS!). Add one HBO channel, TNT, HDNet Movies, Universal HD and a couple of sports stations and the existing line up of HD stations on DirecTv still adds up to one big tease.
