Could the cheapest Blu-ray Disc player on the market be about to get $100 cheaper? Hot on the heels of a UK announcement of a cheaper PlayStation3, speculation online began that a $399 US model would follow. The Hollywood Reporter cited industry sources that seem to be calling it a done deal, citing that the cheaper PS3 will hit US stores November 2nd.

Last week's rumor is this week's confirmed news: the 60GB PS3, which recently saw a $100 price drop, is being phased out for the 80GB model at $599. Although the door is certainly open to a later price drop on the 80GB model, the $499 price of the 60GB PS3 officially remains only until that model sells out. But don't worry- that won't be for a while.

Warner slipped a tantalyzing insert into the The Ultimate Matrix Collection box set released earlier this week, a two-sided affair offically announcing that Blade Runner will hit HD DVD this October on one side and touting a "Kubrick Collection" as coming soon to both HD DVD and Blu-ray on the other.

Now here's the kind of of re-release I think we can all get behind. It's no secret at all that longtime DVD demo favorite, Luc Besson's Fifth Element, was released early on Blu-ray in a transfer that was shockingly poor. Sony is essentially admitting it was wrong (excuse me, I think I just saw a pig fly by my window), and is re-releasing Fifth Element on Blu-ray on July 17th and is offering an replacement program for people who bought the original Blu-ray Disc.

M:I3 Hitting Stores In Three Formats

On October 30th Paramount will release the Tom Cruise blockbuster Mission: Impossible 3 on not one but three separate formats- DVD and the competing Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD high-def formats. While retailers certainly aren't enthused to be carrying triple inventory, this is unequivocally the highest profile release on either of the rivaling next-gen HD formats.

If you follow up a great sci-fi movie with two increasingly inferior sequels, how do you keep selling all three titles? You bundle all of them together so no one can skip out on the sequels, of course! OK, I know I'm being cynical. I love The Matrix and am as excited as the next to snatch this title up on HD DVD when it hits stores on May 22nd. And I'll even go so far as to say that I thought its sequel, Matrix Reloaded had some cool fight sequences and stunts. But I wouldn't watch the incomprhensible Matrix Revolutions again on a bet. Even George Lucas thinks it's whack that I have to buy all three movies to own the first.

In a story line that's becoming all too familiar for HD DVD supporters, news circulated on the web late last week showing that the Blu-ray release of the first two Pirates of the Caribbean movies are handily outselling the HD DVD box set releases of The Matrix by better than three to one. Home Media Magazine was the source of these estimates, pegging the combined sales for the Pirates flicks at over 47,000 total units with the sales of the two Matrix trilogy sets at just under 14,000 total units.
