Sony also announced new Bravia LCD flat panel televisions. The new Bravia V-series LCD panels come in 40" and 46" sizes, with full 1920 x 1080p resolution. The more upscale Bravia XBR3 series, featuring the same screen sizes and resolutions as the V-Series, incorporates Sony's new Digital Reality Engine version 2.5 with increased computational power. The XBR3 Bravia line also feature an ATSC tuner for over the air high definition reception. Both the standard and XBR3 Bravias feature a new BRAVIA Engine Pro video processing system especially designed for high-definition signals. Approximate pricing for the upscale KDL-46XBR3 and KDL-40XBR3 models which ship in September will be $5,300 and $4,300, respectively. A nearly identical XBR2 line is available for $300 less in each respective model. It offers the same features but with replacable color bezels, seeming designed for the custom installation market.

While it's still all too common to walk by a demo room at a trade show and see a clip of Fifth Element running, it is far more rare to actually see one of the police officers from Fifth Element standing in the room!

Aperion Audio showed this new, larger center channel speaker. Added to its current line of value-priced, Internet-marketed speakers, and designed for a better match to the company's other 600-series speakers, the $495 634-VAC uses larger drivers for both bass and midrange than the Aperion's smaller, 500-series center speaker. It's a 3-way design for off-axis performance that should be superior to most comparably-priced, 2-way center channel designs, and its adjustablle crossover can compensates for use on a stand, in a cabinet, or on top of a big-screen TV.

Internet-direct speaker manufacturer Aperion Audio won some street cred from me by building a demo in which the picture didn't take a backseat to the sound.

I get asked for speaker suggestions all the time. I make them. They get ignored. It all comes down to money.

We've had a lot to say about various Sony video announcements and events at the show, but they unveiled a new 7.1-channel receiver as well. Its style is similar to that of other recent, but silver-toned Sony AV receiver designs. Features include 120W x 7 channels of amplification, HDMI switching and upconversion of composite, S-Video, and component sources to HDMI, and automated setup. ($800/August).

The McIntosh XRT2K speakers sounded as big as they look, driven by a pair of the company's MC2KW, 3-module, 2000W (into 8 ohms), modular monoblock amps. Each speaker has six 12" aluminum cone woofers, sixty-four titanium-cone midranges, and forty " titanium-cone tweeters. The speakers are $45,000 each (and a quarter ton of weight, or 590 lbs.). The amps will cost you $30,000 each (they're nearly as heavy as the speakers at 495 lbs.!).

Although everything was blue at the Blu-ray introduction, including the martinis,no one was feeling blue when we were invited into a large theater and shown comparisons of standard definition video vs. high-definition on one of Sony's 4K SXRD digital cinema projectors.

Not only does the sign say so, I'm holding a full production copy of Hitch on Blu-ray Disc right now! OK, it's actually sitting next to my laptop since I can't type and hold it at the same time.

Late Thursday I made it over to Sony's Blu-ray demo theater display, where I was treated to the most extensive Blu-ray demo I've yet seen. Sony had a demo BD that was put together to show off not only clips from many popular films (Spider-Man 2, Chronicles of Narnia and the digitally animated Chicken Little among others) but also the first look at BD's dynamic interactivity.

I love vinyl. I love Classic Records and a few other companies that keep making it. Call me old school, but when I sit down to relax with music, it's the LP I reach for most times. So Classic's announcement that they're celebrating Impulse's 45th anniversary with a long list of 200g vinyl was well received by me at least. Some folks are jaded. I'm not. Thanks Classic, thanks Michael.

MBL had some great sound in their room. Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah" left me with goose bumps and Leonard Cohen's baritone vibrated through my being. While a playing of the "1812 Overture" was meant to highlight the dynamic abilities of the system (the demonstration only partially succeeded in this), I still find that these big speakers are at their best with more minimalist music, imparting the human voice, that violin of the gods, with a sweetness and believability that is rarely captured.

The system, composed of the MBL Reference line speakers mbl 101E ($46,900 / pr) and monoblock mbls 9011 amps ($73,200 / pr), mbl 6010 preamp ($19,000), mbl 1621 transport ($19,000) and mbl 1611 dac ($21,000), all run with Tara Omega speaker cables ($10K/pr) and Tara Zero digital cable ($6,000) and Zero interconnects ($14,000 / pair). And you need a couple of pair of interconnects too, so this stuff starts to add up big time. You do the math. If I had this kind of money, I'd pay off my mortgage first.

OK, it's probably more fair to say I was "Disturbed" at the Ayre and Vandersteen room. Ayre's Steven Silberman was on a mission this weekend to prove to any doubters out there that zero feedback amplifiers and first-order loudspeakers can ROCK!

Fans of "The Office" would recognize Melora Hardin in a heartbeat as Jan, Michael's boss. "Monk" fans think of her as Trudy #2. And if you're addicted to "Gilmore Girls," the just completed season had Melora playing what we all hope will be a regular role on the series. Bet you didn't know she was an amazing singer though, did you?
