Vizio 21:9 Concept

About a year ago, Philips introduced an LCD TV with an aspect ratio of 21:9 (2.33:1), but it was never made available in the US. Now, Vizio is working on the same idea as demonstrated by this concept piece. It measures 58 inches diagonally with a pixel resolution of 2560x1080, perfect for displaying movies without the hated letterbox bars. The prototype uses CCFL backlighting, but the final version could use LEDs. I was told it could become an actual product by the third quarter of this year and that it would be "Vizio priced."

Curious, why not 2.35:1 or 2.40:1. Seems most movies are released in either of these ratios. Thus playing them on this set still gives you black bars, albeit small ones. I understand that you can't match all the ratios but going to 2.40:1 would make more sense, to me anyway.

21:9 is a simplification in order to better show the difference to 16:9 (1,78:1). The ratio of all previous widescreen-"cinema"-televisions (2 Philips and this Vizio) is ยด2,37:1 what exactly between 2,35:1 (old Cinemascope and like other European Technovision) and 2,39:1 (todays Panavision) is:).
