Unit-to-unit sample variations, the viewing environment, and the source might render these recommendations less than optimum. They are provided only as a potentially useful starting place.

The settings here that are most likely to translate reliably from one sample to another are those involving specific features with only a few selections, such as Gamma and Noise Reduction. The ones most likely to be subject to sample variations are video controls offering a wide range of adjustment, such as white balance (grayscale) and color management (where available). Even relatively small differences in the common control settings, such as Contrast, Brightness, and Gamma, can shift the white balance, though the resulting visible change may be innocuous. Production line tolerances can do the same.

We do not provide settings or access codes for service menus. Random alterations of such controls without detailed knowledge of what they do may corrupt a set's firmware. This will likely require extensive in-shop repairs not covered under the warrantee. Service menu calibrations should be attempted only by an experienced calibrator familiar with the specific brand of set, and a clear understanding of which controls to use and which to avoid. We strongly recommend that you find the optimum basic video settings for your sample by using one of the many available display setup DVDs, such as Digital Video Essentials (DVD) or DVE HD Basics (Blu-ray). These will help you to set the basic controls correctly, brightness, contrast, sharpness, and sometimes color and tint. Experimenting with the more complex color calibration and other controls in the user menus will do no harm; the changes may be easily reset. But tuning a set "by eye" is no substitute for a full calibration, which is best left to a trained and properly equipped technician such as those certified by the Imaging Science Foundation (ISF) or THX.

Sony's HX850

Excellent review Tom on the HX850 but dont over look the Sony HX750. I have the 46HX750 and besides the Corning Gorilla Glass the 2 tv's are almost the same. I used your settings for the HX850 on my tv and they worked! They looked better then Cnet's settings. But that being said Tom great review. I only hope you guys will be able to give a review of the HX750 which in my book and to my untrained eye measures up the the HX850 in every way.

It seems to me that the 2D performance in the rating system is king, yet the Sharp Elite got 4.5 stars and this one got 5 stars. Therefore, judging by HT's rating system this TV is better that the Sharp Elite when watching regular 2D content. Or, is the 5 star rating based on the price point of the TV? Which doesn't add up either, since the Elite has no competition, then why it would get 4.5 stars? I understand that the Elite is considered the best TV in the market, but I have always found the rating system a little confusing and inconsistent. Am I missing something?

Sharp vs. Sony

It think that Mr. Norton thinks the Sony is just better than the Sharp Elite PRO-60X5FD which was a TV from last year. Maybe Sony has made improvements in LCD/LED technology since last year. But I am surprised the Sony got a better rating than this years Panasonic VT50. Some reviews say the VT50 is the best TV so far this year.

If you own a Sony KDL-55HX850 3D LCD you really are a happy man, because I do and I recommended it to all my friends and relatives. Since I bought my Sony LCD I've been living a full high definition experience and I just can't get enough of it.

Sony has come out with a 70" KDL model LED, 3D, smart TV, and I'm curious, does this one perform similar to the KDL 55 you reviewed? It has the motion flow, but it's rated at 120Hrz. Is 120 fast enough for this size of TV?
